Every year we pack our overnight bags, grab our notebooks and slip away for a day and a half of learning, sharing and all around hell-raising. Or, as we like to call it, “pepperpalooza.”

This year’s theme was Storytelling.

After spending the day with a variety of master storytellers, the tables were suddenly turned. Each of us was given an hour to come up with a short, handwritten story of our own. Of course, in true redpepper fashion, there was a catch: Once the anonymous stories were written, they were redistributed to be read in-studio by a coworker. That coworker was then encouraged to enhance the story as he or she saw fit and to improv a new ending.

My inspiration came from a Russian graphic designer by the name of Yulia Brodskaya who takes the dying art of quilling to an entirely new level. She creates typographic studies using this paper technique. Her work can be found here.

I’m usually drawn more to projects that require me to work with my hands rather than digital media. After studying Yulia’s work and doing some research, I decided that I was going to make a solid attempt. My next quest was to find a relevant quote.

I recalled a quote that I shamelessly incorporated in the introduction of my cover letter when applying to redpepper. The quote read: “People ignore design that ignores people.” Frank Chimero’s words really resonated with me. It successfully sums up a crucial part of design. In order to create effective design, it’s essential to understand demographic and the way that people perceive the world around them as you continue to do the same as a designer. People respond strongly to things and art that carry a human element; a tangible component that connects them to a specific need, value, or other people.

As I pursued this maddening (but fulfilling) process, I realized that the only way to fully grasp the whole composition properly was to stand up on a chair above the table and to constantly be looking at my piece from directly above. This is something to be take away: the idea that it is important to always observe your work from afar and to consider all details as they mold and work with one another.

I documented my process in a time lapse video below. I would like to thank and credit Trent Reznor (soundtrack) for making quilling look even more badass. Because well, it just is.

Don’t Mess Up My Baby from Shelby Rodeffer on Vimeo.

One of the core values at redpepper is that we actively support personal growth, which is why, as an intern, one is encouraged to complete a project based on learning something new. Animation is an area that I want to grow in. I have never composed a full animation before and hadn’t even ever opened some of the programs that I used.

For this video, my goals were to (a) figure out how to animate, and (b) give a narrative in the most simplistic way I could. I was inspired by 5-Second Films and how little information you have to give your audience to tell a story. Here, the scene is set and a story is told in one minute flat. While I don’t claim that this is a five-star animation, I am proud to have added a few wrinkles to my brain.

My name’s Shelby, and with the completion of this video comes the completion of an amazing internship at redpepper. The knowledge, energy, friendship, and drive that I have gained in recent months have been – and will remain – invaluable. I feel so lucky to have had this experience!

Are you our next intern?

INTERNING IS NOT A SPECTATOR SPORT.

UPDATE: The Account Management and Copywriting Intern Positions for Spring 2012 have been filled. Thanks everyone who applied. The Graphic Design Internship is still open.

As a redpepper intern, you’ll contribute firsthand to something we hold as the highest importance – our culture. We are addicted to learning, collaborating and being actively creative on a daily basis. You’ll learn the ins and outs of the ad world, build relationships in the industry, get a taste of a truly collaborative work environment, and probably even pick up a new skill set or two.

Of course, your days here will largely be what you make of them. You can be part of changing this place if you want, but that comes through initiative, courage, and some elbow grease. And you’ll have a mentor whose brain you can pick along the way, as long as you’re ready to return the favor.

You might be thinking, how much can really happen in a three-month, 20 hour a week (minimum) internship? Well, that’s exactly our question to you.

CALLING ALL FUTURE GAMECHANGERS.

We’re looking specifically for college juniors and seniors. We designed our program to give undergraduate students some so-called real world experience, and for us to learn from the next generation of superstars. All redpepper internships are unpaid, which means you probably won’t be getting any fancy new cars while you’re here. What you will get, however, is awesome experience and bragging rights for life.

Okay, that was the fine print. We’re really looking for unquenchable learners, big thinkers, clear communicators, self-motivators, and all-hands-on-deckers. We’re looking for inspiring talent more than mere qualifications. And though there are endless ways to get noticed, the quickest way to get ignored is by having a bad attitude. We like happy people, and preferably those capable of quoting Tommy Boy in their sleep.

More specifically, we want:

Design interns with fantastical portfolios that showcase a wide variety of work. And they should be Adobe Creative Suite wiz kids, too.

Copywriting interns who are strong storytellers and conceptual thinkers, while also able to fit whole essays into 140 characters. They don’t always come from an obvious major, as long as they can submit writing samples that make us laugh, cry, or hit the Thinking Man pose.

Account management interns who take “business-minded” to a new level. They’re excellent communicators with both left- and right-brainers. They’re highly creative problem solvers while being meticulous about details. And they get an adrenaline rush from hearing the word “spreadsheet.”

HOW TO APPLY

Make sure you include everything it will take for us to understand why there’s no option but to make you our newest, best intern ever. Here are some things to consider:

If your internship warrants a portfolio, reel, or writing samples, please don’t send us everything you’ve ever done. We want to see only your best, most relevant work. Keep it short and sweet.

Include a cover letter that explains what you’ll bring to the table in terms of experience, expertise, perspective, and so on.

Tailor your resume to include the most relevant experience and information you can give us.

Provide at least one relevant reference so we can get a third-party verification of your mad skills.

Email your application materials to Lindsey Armstrong at lindsey@redpepperland.com. In the subject line, specify which internship you’re applying for. We can’t wait to hear from you!

Where Lost Things GO

All good things must come to an end.

I have learned so much from my internship here at redpepper, in the realm of graphic design and marketing, but also in life lessons. It would be hard to come to work here and not be inspired by the creative, forward-thinking, and positive minds that surrounded me everyday. And for that, I thank everyone here.

For my final project, I created a stop motion animation. As a print designer, this project has helped me start thinking in a more linear way. It eased me into the world of motion and animation. This short video is intended to shift your attention from the frustration of losing your things to the good times your lost things are having.

Thanks for everything redpepper! Born and raised in Oklahoma. LOVE Tennessee though. It is beautiful here. I swear they don’t make these colors in OK. The trees alone! Anyway…

As I said I am an intern. And there’s plenty to learn and do at redpepper. With all of these resources (human and machine) at my fingertips I have decided to take the opportunity and make a stop motion animation for my intern project.

Here are some things that intrigue me about stop motion films:

1. the ability to create the impossible
2. the personification of objects
3. the interaction of 2D and 3D forms
4. the illusion of movement

Below are a couple of my favorite stop motions that are inspiring. In the first I love the bed as the background canvas and the simplicity in the movement of the objects.

This one uses cut paper, claymation and unpredictable elements.

Losing things is frustrating. KNOWING that you put an even number of socks in the dryer yet come out with an odd is completely baffling. So I am exploring the land where lost things go, in the form of stop motion. It is out of pure curiosity and a hope to make losing things a little bit easier.
